Course Description: This two-hour course is intended to provide a basic background in lateral load sources combined with vertical load sources in order to reveal some of the inner workings of residential wood-framed structural connections.. The course is recommended for inspectors, plan reviewers and other Building Department personnel. If you have the 2018 IBC and IRC/2019 CBC and CRC, then it would be good to have those books available.

Objectives: Upon completion: participants will better be able to:

  • Understand common vertical loads on a structure
  • Better understand the source of lateral loads on a structure
  • Explain how typical roof, floor, shear transfer and foundation details accommodate those loads
  • Understand how prescriptive codes are addressing the loads

Instructor: David Sparks, S.E., P.E.

Dave has been working in the residential engineering and construction industry since 1998. He started as an associate engineer in training at Bingham Engineering in Phoenix, Arizona before joining the newly formed Felten Group, Inc. in 2001. He obtained his California PE in 2003 and then his Arizona SE in 2006.

Dave has taught several classes for the Arizona Building Officials meetings (AZBO) including Wall Bracing from the IRC, Changes to the ASCE7-16 Wind Provisions, Forensic Engineering, Inspection Nightmares, and Truss Calculations from an Engineer’s Perspective.
