Program Focus: Attendees will take a closer look at the understanding of the requirements dealing with the wall construction and wall coverings, including wood wall framing details.


• How is the maximum allowable spacing of wood studs determined? How is a double top plate to be installed? A single top plate?

• What is the appropriate number and type of fasteners for connecting wood structural members? What is the maximum allowable spacing of such fasteners? What alternative fastening methods are acceptable?

• What are the height limitations for 2x4 wood studs? For 2x6 studs?

• Where must a bored hole in a stud be located? What is the maximum permitted size of a bored hole located in a bearing wall? In a nonbearing wall?

• What is the maximum notch size allowed in a bearing stud wall? In a nonbearing wall? How are notches and bored holes in a top plate to be addressed?

• How are foundation cripple studs to be sized? When must cripple walls be sheathed?

• What intermittent methods are acceptable for the construction of braced wall panels?

• What percentage of a braced wall line must consist of braced wall panels? How close to the end of a braced wall line is a braced wall panel required. What is minimum required panel length?

• What alternate methods of construction are provided for braced wall panels? What are the code benefits of continuous structural panel sheathing?

• How do braced wall panels need to be connected to the floor framing and top plates?

• What special conditions apply in Seismic Design Categories D0, D1 and D2?

• What methods are acceptable for connecting top plates of exterior braced wall panels to roof framing members? How are braced wall panels required to be supported?

• How must gypsum board be applied on an interior wall? How must it be fastened?

• Where is the use of water-resistant gypsum backing board prohibited?

• When is weather-resistant sheathing paper required on an exterior wall?

• What is the criteria for the installation of weep screeds in exterior plaster applications?

• How shall masonry veneer be supported? What method of anchorage is mandated?

• How must fiber cement siding be installed? Vinyl siding? Adhered masonry veneer?

Master of Business Administration with Minor in Construction Management, Bachelor of Science with Minor in Construction Management, Associates of Arts Degree in Building Inspection Technology, and University of Wisconsin - Madison College of Engineering study .
