Program Focus: Attendees will take a closer look at the guidelines for a minimum level requirement relating to foundation systems, including Grading, soil evaluation, footing size, depth, and slope, foundation design, and reinforcing. Protected shallow foundations and wood foundations.

KEY POINTS: Foundations

• How must lots be graded? What is the minimum required slope of the grade away from the foundation?

• When are soils tests required? When are presumptive load-bearing values to be used?

• What criteria determine the minimum size of footings? What is the minimum required footing thickness? Minimum projection distance? Minimum depth?

• What is the maximum slope permitted for the top surface of footings? The bottom surface?

• In what manner must the sill plate be connected to the foundation wall? What is the minimum size and spacing for anchor bolts?

• How shall buildings be located in respect to an adjacent ascending slope? Descending slope?

• How are foundations and floor slabs for buildings located on expansive soils to be regulated?

• Where a building is constructed on or adjacent to a slope, what is the minimum required height of a foundation above a street gutter or other point of drainage discharge?

• What are the provisions for the installation of wood foundation systems?

• What criteria are necessary to address plain concrete and masonry foundation walls? Reinforced concrete and masonry foundation walls?

• When are pier foundations acceptable? What are the minimum requirements?

• What is an insulating concrete form (ICF) foundation wall system? What are the different types of ICF systems? How are they regulated?

• How must retaining walls be designed?

• When are drains required around foundation walls? What drainage methods are acceptable?

• How are soils classified? What are the characteristics of the various soil groups?

• When must a foundation wall be dampproofed? Waterproofed? What methods are used for damp proofing and waterproofing?

• What is the minimum required size for under-floor ventilation openings? Where shall such openings be located? How may the required area of openings be reduced?

• Under what conditions is an unvented crawl space permitted?

• How shall access to an under-floor space be provided?

• When is a drainage system needed for an under-floor space?

Master of Business Administration with Minor in Construction Management, Bachelor of Science with Minor in Construction Management, Associates of Arts Degree in Building Inspection Technology, and University of Wisconsin - Madison College of Engineering study .
