Description:  This presentation will review proper design, specification, and installation of glued laminated (glulam) beams and structural composite lumber (SCL).  New technologies streamlined design options, and sustainability issues will be included, as will the constructability benefits of engineered wood beams.

Converting to Advanced Framing: Learn from Experience            0.10 CEU’s

As energy codes become more strict, builders and designers are seeking options for energy-efficient construction that maintain strength, durability, sustainability and cost effectiveness.  Advanced framing is a system of construction framing techniques designed to optimize material usage and increase energy efficiency.  Common advanced framing techniques will be shared along with the challenges and benefits that builders find during the conversion from traditional framing to advanced framing.

Description: Back to basics for big buildings.  The demand for commercial and multifamily construction is soaring, and the framing industry is expanding to meet this demand.  APA – The Engineered Wood Association has walked hundreds of job sites and identified the most common wood construction framing errors found in today’s nonresidential buildings.  This session will examine the consequences of these framing mistakes from the ground up, providing practical solutions for avoiding typical issues using APA’s resources as a guide.


Instructor: Aleeta Dene, P.E.

Aleeta Dene, P.E. is an Engineered Wood Specialist for the Field Services Division of APA. A licensed Professional Engineer in the state of California, Aleeta graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering. Prior to joining APA, Aleeta worked as a structural engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Aleeta is an active member of SEAOC and ICC in Los Angeles.
