Title:               Residential Blue Print Reading for Permit Techs

Description: This one-day class will cover in depth the construction aspects of a two-story single-family residence and conversions of existing space into livable area. Participants will review actual construction documents and research the IRC in depth. A full understanding of measurements, symbols, legends and details, locating information in the specifications, how to calculate area, and the reading of truss and structural calculations will be covered. Problems associated with conversion of space into livable area will be discussed. This will include egress, light and ventilation, size and headroom requirements, stairways and how to recognize possible structural issues. Please bring to class the 2015 International Residential Code, (2016 California Residential Code) an architectural scale and a calculator.

Books needed: 2015 IRC (2016 California Residential Code) 2015 UPC (2016 California Plumbing Code), a calculator, architectural and engineering scales.

Objectives:   Upon completion, participants will be better able to:

1.    Understand the Building Code scope and purpose

2.    Gain knowledge of structural terms and concepts

3.    Comprehend inspection terminology

4.    Grasp fundamentals of electrical, mechanical and plumbing codes

5.    Recognize Engineering and Architectural scales and be able to read measurements with each

6.    Learn the basic components of a single-family set of construction documents

7.    Be able to research and locate code topics

8.    Read tables applicable to basic reviews in IRC, UPC and UMC

9.    Recognize appropriate building materials

Instructor:    Mary Dickson, CBO, Building Official, City of Litchfield Park, AZ

Mary has been the Building Official for the City of Litchfield Park, AZ since 2017, the Building Official/Fire Marshal for the City of El Mirage for 10 years and Senior Plans Examiner for the City of Avondale, AZ for 9 years. Mary also does free-lance blueprint drawing of custom homes and remodels and has over 500 projects in 7 states.Before finding her niche in Building Safety she taught high school and junior college classes in architecture, drafting, blueprint reading and computer aided design (CAD) for 12 years.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Career and Technology Education and has earned thirteen certifications from ICC (so far!). Mary has taught classes in 9 states on IBC and IRC Overview, Residential Blue Print Reading for Permit Techs, Counter Intelligence, Front Counter Plan Review, Property Maintenance Code, and Hoarding Issues for Building and Code Enforcement.
