Rich Friedman and Chris Anderson from HCD gave a report on the automatic gas shutoff valves for seismic and excess flow valves.

SB1992 required HCD to to consider whether to propose the adoption of regulations mandating the installation of seismic gas shutoff devices and/or excess flow gas shutoff devices in all or a portion of dwelling units, motels, hotels and lodging houses. The determination whether to propose building standards were to be made during the annual code adoption cycle following January 1, 2003. Any proposal to the CBSC must include an analysis of the cost and safety benefits of the proposal. If the Department’s determination is not to propose building standards mandating the installation of seismic gas shutoff devices and/or excess flow gas shutoff devices, SB 1992 requires the Department to explain in writing the rationale for its decision.
